Laser Hair Removal in Chicago: A Complete Guide

The honest version of how the treatment works, what it can do, and what to expect across a series.

June 1, 2026 · 9 min read · By Chicago Medspa Clinical Team

    A Short Introduction

Laser hair removal is one of the most requested treatments in our practice, and also one of the most over-promised in the broader market. The treatment works very well for the right candidate, performed on the right schedule, with realistic expectations. This guide is the honest version — written to make the consultation shorter and the decision easier. For the service page itself, see laser hair removal at Chicago Medspa.

    How It Works

Hair removal lasers work by emitting a wavelength of light that is absorbed by the pigment in an active hair follicle. The absorbed light becomes heat, the heat disrupts the follicle's ability to produce hair, and the follicle enters a long dormant phase. The skin around the follicle is largely spared, which is what allows the treatment to be both effective and safe in trained hands.

The reason a series is required is biological, not commercial. Hair grows in cycles, and only follicles in the active growth phase are vulnerable to the treatment at any given visit. The cycles vary by area of the body, which is why appointment spacing changes depending on what is being treated. Our practice uses medical-grade laser equipment, calibrated to your skin and the area being treated — never a one-size-fits-all setting.

    Treatment Areas

Almost any area where unwanted hair grows can be treated, with some practical caveats. The most common requests are:

    • Underarms, lip, chin, and other small facial areas
    • Bikini line and full bikini
    • Lower and upper legs
    • Lower and upper arms
    • Chest, back, and shoulders

Small areas are quick — under-fifteen-minute appointments are common. Larger areas, such as full legs or a full back, are longer visits. The treatment is generally well tolerated; most patients describe the sensation as a brief, warm snap, similar to the flick of a rubber band, followed quickly by a cooling contact. Topical numbing is available for sensitive areas if desired.

    Number of Sessions

Plan for six to eight sessions in the initial series for most areas. Coarser hair often responds in fewer sessions; finer hair and hormonally driven areas typically benefit from the higher end of the range. Spacing matters: facial areas are treated every four to six weeks, body areas every six to eight weeks. The schedule is built around the underlying hair-growth cycle, not around what is convenient for the calendar.

Across the series, patients notice progressively thinner, sparser regrowth. Individual results vary, and your provider will be honest with you at each visit about how the area is responding and whether the protocol should be adjusted.

    Preparing for Your Session

A few simple steps make the treatment more comfortable and more effective:

    • Shave the area twelve to twenty-four hours before the appointment. Do not wax, pluck, or epilate — the laser needs the follicle intact below the surface.
    • Avoid sun exposure for two weeks before and after each appointment. Tan skin changes how the laser is absorbed and increases the chance of irritation.
    • Skip retinoids and exfoliating acids for several days before treatment on the area being treated.
    • Arrive clean — no lotion, no makeup, no deodorant on the area being treated.

Your provider will give you a written pre- and post-treatment protocol at the consultation. The instructions are detailed for a reason — the small steps make the difference between a good experience and an uncomfortable one.

    Long-Term Results

The honest framing is long-term reduction, not permanent removal. After a full series, most patients see a substantial and lasting reduction in hair density and rate of regrowth. The remaining hair is typically finer, lighter, and slower to return. For many patients, the result is functionally close to permanent — but the body continues to produce new follicles over time, particularly in areas influenced by hormones, and maintenance sessions are part of a thoughtful plan.

A reasonable maintenance schedule is one to two sessions per year after the initial series, adjusted as needed. Patients with hormonal drivers may need more; patients without, fewer. The honest version: it is durable, not absolute, and the long arc of the result is what matters.

    Common Questions

    Is laser hair removal painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as a brief, warm snap, similar to the flick of a rubber band. The contact cooling on our medical-grade laser softens the sensation considerably. Topical numbing is available for sensitive areas.

How many sessions will I need?

Plan for six to eight sessions in the initial series. Coarser hair often responds in fewer; finer and hormonally driven hair often benefits from the higher end of the range. Your provider will reassess as the series progresses.

    Is the result permanent?

The honest version is long-term reduction, not permanent removal. Most patients see a substantial and lasting decrease in hair density after a full series, with maintenance sessions once or twice a year to address new follicle activity.

Can I be treated in summer?

Yes, with care. Sun exposure before and after a session changes how the laser is absorbed and increases the chance of irritation. Patients who are treated in summer simply commit to sun avoidance and consistent SPF on the treated area.

Does it work on all skin tones?

Modern medical-grade lasers are calibrated to be safe and effective across a wide range of skin tones, but the settings vary considerably. The consultation is where the right protocol is chosen for the skin in front of us.

    How do I begin?

Book a consultation. We will examine the area, discuss your goals, and write a plan with a realistic number of sessions and a clear schedule. There is no pressure to book a treatment on the day of the consultation.
