— Treatment Overview —

What Tox Treatment Is

Tox treatment, also called wrinkle relaxer or neuromodulator treatment, is an aesthetic injectable that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles to soften the expression lines created by repeated movement. At Chicago Medspa, tox treatment is performed by a licensed medical provider under physician supervision in a clinical environment in the Chicago Loop.

The active ingredient is a purified neuromodulator that interrupts the nerve signal to a targeted muscle for a defined period of time. When injected at specific points along the forehead, between the brows (glabella), or around the eyes (crow's feet), the muscle's pull on the overlying skin softens — and the dynamic line that forms when you frown, raise your brows, or squint becomes less pronounced. For a longer look at how different neuromodulator approaches compare in a Chicago context, see our journal piece on wrinkle relaxer options in Chicago.

Tox treatment addresses dynamic lines — the lines that appear with movement. Static lines (etched in even when your face is at rest) and lost facial volume are better addressed with other treatments such as filler. Tox and filler are often complementary rather than interchangeable, and a thoughtful plan accounts for both, as discussed in our facial harmony guide.

Who Tox Treatment Is For

Tox treatment is suitable for most healthy adults seeking to soften dynamic expression lines while maintaining natural facial movement. Treatment goals generally fall into two categories:

  • Corrective: clients in their late 30s, 40s, and beyond looking to soften visible lines that have developed over years of expression
  • Preventive: clients in their late 20s and 30s using lower, conservative dosing to keep dynamic movement from etching lines into the skin over time

The most commonly treated areas are the forehead lines, the glabella ("11s" between the brows), and crow's feet around the eyes. Other areas — bunny lines, chin dimpling, downturned mouth corners — may also be addressed depending on assessment. The right approach depends on your facial anatomy, the strength and pattern of your muscle movement, and your aesthetic goals. For more on building a long-term plan, our piece on when to start anti-aging treatments covers timing considerations.

Tox treatment is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for clients with certain neuromuscular conditions, active skin infections at the injection site, or known sensitivity to the medication. Your provider will review your full medical history during the consultation and confirm whether tox is the right fit.

— The Visit —

What to Expect at Your Tox Treatment Appointment

Start with a dedicated 30–45-minute consultation, with a full 45-minute slot reserved for your goals, questions and proposed plan. A separate treatment visit reserves 30–45 minutes for preparation, mapping, treatment and aftercare review. This is time for the whole care experience, not continuous injection time. Ask our team to reserve both appointments if you would like them on the same day.

When you arrive at our Chicago Loop location at 30 N Michigan Ave, you'll be welcomed into a private treatment room. Your provider reviews your aesthetic goals, examines your facial movement at rest and in expression, and discusses areas being treated. This assessment is the most important part of the visit — the muscle-by-muscle plan determines how natural the result will look.

The skin is cleansed and the injection points are mapped. Treatment uses a fine needle to deliver small doses at the planned points. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch — brief and well tolerated. Ice or topical numbing can be used for clients who prefer additional comfort.

After the injections, your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions and answer any questions about what to expect over the coming weeks. There is no required downtime — most clients return to work or other activities immediately.

— Results —

Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

Onset (3–7 days): Initial softening typically begins to appear within 3–7 days as the neuromodulator gradually takes effect. The change is subtle at first and builds steadily.

Peak (about 2 weeks): Response and symmetry are assessed at the planned review near two weeks. Full response varies by product and patient; this review does not mean further dosing is appropriate. Do not wait for the visit to report symptoms.

Duration (3–4 months typically): Results commonly last 3–4 months for most clients. Duration varies based on metabolism, muscle strength, treatment area, and individual factors. Maintenance appointments are usually scheduled before results fully wear off to keep movement consistent.

Immediate post-treatment do's and don'ts:

  • Stay upright for 4 hours after treatment — avoid lying flat or face-down
  • Avoid vigorous exercise, saunas, and hot yoga for 24 hours
  • Avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated areas for 24 hours
  • Tiny pinpoint redness or a small bump at injection sites can occur and typically resolves within an hour or two
  • Mild bruising is uncommon but possible — arnica gel can help if it does appear

Effects beyond the injection area can start hours to weeks after treatment. Seek emergency care immediately for new difficulty speaking, swallowing, or breathing, or marked generalized weakness; call 9-1-1 for an emergency. Call promptly for isolated eyelid drooping, significant dry eye, increasing redness, or fever.

— Why Chicago Medspa —

Why Choose Chicago Medspa for Tox Treatment

The technical product is only one variable in the result — placement, dosing, and aesthetic judgment determine whether the outcome looks refined and natural or overdone. At Chicago Medspa, tox treatment is performed by a licensed medical provider under physician supervision. Every plan is individualized: your provider assesses your specific muscle pattern, builds a treatment map for your face rather than a generic template, and dosing is calibrated to preserve expression. The goal is always softer, never frozen. Many clients pair tox treatment with regular medical facials as part of an integrated long-term plan that supports skin health alongside expression-line treatment.

What tox treatment costs depends on the areas being treated. Your provider reviews the recommended areas and what they cost openly during your consultation, before anything is scheduled and before any product is drawn up, so you know what is planned and what it comes to. Your consultation is complimentary, with no obligation to book.

Located at 30 N Michigan Ave, Suite 1220 in the Chicago Loop, Chicago Medspa is steps from Millennium Park, Block 37, and the Magnificent Mile. The Loop location is convenient for clients across downtown Chicago including Streeterville, River North, the Gold Coast, and the West Loop, as well as accessible via the State/Lake and Washington/Wabash CTA stations.

New clients begin with a complimentary Injectable Consultation, with no obligation to book. The consultation includes a full facial assessment and a customized treatment plan recommendation. We do not pressure same-day bookings — the consultation is a clinical conversation, not a sales appointment.

01 / We listen and explain

Discuss the expression lines that concern you, the movement you want to retain, and your experience with previous injectable treatments.

Ask us to explain unfamiliar terms or repeat anything. We review your priorities together before recommending a next step.

02 / We agree on your plan

We explain the proposed approach, alternatives, limits, relevant risks, expected recovery and the total cost before you decide. You can take time to think, ask for a staged plan or decide against treatment.

Questions we will work through with you:

04 / Leave with clear next steps

Before you leave, we review your written instructions, what to expect next, which concerns need a call or urgent care, and how to reach the team. We invite you to talk through the plan in your own words so we can clear up anything that is uncertain.

Your take-home conversation includes:

  • Your written instructions for the treated areas and whom to contact with questions.
  • What the planned review will assess and which concerns should be raised sooner.
  • How your response and preferences will guide future appointment timing.

We discuss how to support your goals at home and when to review your plan. Where a treatment has a visible result, we explain what is known about maintenance without promising that a product, routine or extra treatment will make it last longer. Your next step follows your response and goals.
