— Treatment Overview —
What Laser Hair Removal Is
Laser hair removal is a medical aesthetic treatment that uses focused light energy to target and disable active hair follicles, producing long-term reduction in unwanted hair across the face and body. At Chicago Medspa, laser hair reduction is performed by licensed medical providers in a clinical environment in the Chicago Loop.
The treatment works through a process called selective photothermolysis. A precise wavelength of light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair shaft and travels down to the follicle, where the absorbed energy converts to heat and disrupts the follicle's ability to produce new hair. Surrounding skin is left intact thanks to integrated cooling and the laser's selective targeting.
Medical laser hair reduction is fundamentally different from at-home IPL devices and waxing. At-home IPL uses scattered light at a fraction of the energy and is not calibrated to skin type. Medical lasers — like the Nd:YAG laser technology used in our program — deliver clinically meaningful energy at wavelengths matched to your skin and hair, producing results that compound over a structured series. Our laser hair removal basics guide breaks down how the technology works in plain language.

Who Laser Hair Removal Is For
Modern laser hair reduction is suitable for a wide range of skin tones and hair types when matched to the appropriate device settings. The treatment is commonly recommended for clients seeking long-term reduction in unwanted hair on:
- Underarms, legs, and bikini area
- Back, chest, and shoulders
- Upper lip, chin, sideburns, and other facial areas
- Forearms and the nape of the neck
Hair color matters. Darker, coarser hair contains more pigment and responds most effectively to treatment. Very light blonde, red, gray, or white hair contains little melanin and typically does not respond to laser hair reduction — your provider will review hair color and density during your consultation and set realistic expectations.
Laser hair reduction is not appropriate on currently tanned skin (recent sun exposure or self-tanner), during pregnancy, on areas with active infection or certain skin conditions, or for clients on photosensitizing medications such as isotretinoin within the previous 6 months. Your provider will review your full medical history during the consultation and confirm candidacy before any treatment is scheduled.

What to Expect at Your Laser Hair Reduction Appointment
A laser hair reduction appointment at Chicago Medspa typically runs 30–60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Smaller areas like the upper lip or underarms can be completed in under 15 minutes; larger areas like full legs or back run longer.
Before your appointment, the treatment area should be shaved 24 hours in advance — this allows the laser to target the follicle without surface hair absorbing energy. Avoid waxing, plucking, or threading for at least four weeks prior, since the follicle needs to be intact for the laser to work.
When you arrive at our Chicago Loop location at 30 N Michigan Ave, you'll be welcomed into a private treatment room. Your provider reviews your treatment plan, confirms the area, and provides protective eyewear. The skin is cleansed and the laser handpiece is calibrated to your skin type and the area being treated.
During the treatment, the handpiece delivers rapid pulses of light across the area. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick warm snap, similar to a rubber band tap, eased by integrated cooling. There is no recovery time required mid-treatment — sessions move quickly and efficiently.
After the session, a soothing post-care product is applied. You can return to normal activities immediately, with a few exceptions noted in aftercare below. Sessions are typically spaced 4–8 weeks apart to align with the hair growth cycle.

Results, Recovery, and Aftercare
First 1–3 weeks: Treated hairs appear to keep growing for several days, then shed over the following weeks as the follicles release them. This shedding phase is a sign the treatment is working — gentle exfoliation can help.
Between sessions: New hair regrowth in the treated area becomes progressively finer, sparser, and slower to return. Treatment is timed to active growth phases, which is why sessions are scheduled rather than done back-to-back.
Series duration: Most clients require a course of typically 6–8 sessions to achieve substantial long-term hair reduction. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year may be recommended to address any residual or hormonally driven regrowth. Individual results vary based on hair color, density, anatomical area, and hormonal factors.
Immediate aftercare: Mild redness, warmth, and slight perifollicular swelling are normal and typically resolve within a few hours to 48 hours. A cool compress and gentle moisturizer help. Avoid hot showers, saunas, intense exercise, and chlorinated pools for 24 hours.
Sun and skincare: Strict sun avoidance and daily SPF 30+ on treated areas is essential before, during, and after the series — sun-tanned skin disqualifies you from your next session and increases the risk of pigment changes. Avoid retinoids and chemical exfoliants on the treated area for 48–72 hours after each session. Many clients also incorporate regular medical facials between laser sessions to support skin barrier health and overall complexion quality.
