How Laser Hair Removal Actually Works
The mechanism is called selective photothermolysis. A specific wavelength of light is delivered to the skin, where it is preferentially absorbed by melanin — the pigment in the hair shaft and follicle. The absorbed light converts to heat, and that heat damages the follicular structures responsible for producing new hair. When the targeting is correct, surrounding skin is left intact.

- No sun exposure or self-tanner for at least four weeks before each session. Tanned skin contains more pigment, which competes with the follicle for the laser’s energy and increases the risk of pigment changes.
- No waxing, plucking, or threading the area for at least four weeks before treatment. The follicle needs to be intact for the laser to target it. Shaving is fine — and is in fact required in the day or two before the appointment.
