Tox Consultation: A Focused Question List

A tox consultation is more useful when it begins with the change you want to discuss, rather than a request for a predetermined number of units. Product identity, treatment area and your history belong in the conversation before a clinician proposes a plan.

What to know

  • Bring exact prior product information when available.
  • Ask about the proposed product and area, not just units.
  • Review the full manufacturer warnings with the clinician.

Bring goals and previous treatment information

Describe the expression or appearance concern that matters to you and what you would like to retain. If you have received treatment elsewhere, bring the exact product name, approximate date and treated areas if available. Do not guess a product from a clinic's general use of the word tox.

Allergan's BOTOX Cosmetic information explains that dosing units are specific to that product and are not interchangeable with other botulinum toxin products. A prior unit total therefore should not become a self-selected plan for a different product or a different area.

Ask what the proposal means

The manufacturer describes temporary reduction in underlying muscle activity for specified appearance concerns. Ask the clinician which product and area are proposed, what the labeling says, what improvement is reasonable and what limitations apply to your goal.

Also ask whether the concern is related to movement, volume or another feature. Those are different treatment conversations. A consultation can identify that distinction without committing you to an injection, a combination treatment or a package before the assessment is complete.

Read the full safety information

Tox treatment is a medical decision. BOTOX Cosmetic labeling includes a boxed warning about potentially serious effects, including swallowing, speaking or breathing problems and spread of toxin effects. The full manufacturer information should be reviewed with the clinician rather than reduced to a promise of a quick visit.

Share relevant medical history, medicines, allergies and previous reactions through the clinical intake process. Ask how follow-up questions and urgent concerns are handled. This guide does not supply a dose, treatment interval or personal suitability decision; it helps you leave a complimentary consultation knowing what is proposed, why, and what information you need before consenting.
