PRP Hair Consultation: Start With the Hair-Loss Assessment

Thinning hair is a description, not a diagnosis. Before deciding whether PRP belongs in a treatment plan, the first useful step is understanding the reason for the hair change. A consultation should begin with that assessment rather than a predetermined package or promise of regrowth.

What to know

  • Start with the cause of the hair change.
  • Ask how PRP compares with the relevant alternatives.
  • Do not treat a package or session count as a diagnosis.

Describe the pattern and history

The American Academy of Dermatology explains that hair-loss assessment may include questions about when the change began, an examination and, when indicated, additional testing. Different causes can require different approaches. A treatment that is relevant to one diagnosis may not answer another person's concern.

Prepare a clear account of what you have noticed and any previous evaluation or treatment. Photographs or medical information should be shared only through the clinical process the practice provides. A public website is for general service information and should not be used to submit a private hair-loss history.

Ask where PRP fits

AAD describes PRP among possible hair-loss treatments, while emphasizing that no single treatment works for everyone. That supports asking where it fits for the diagnosis under discussion, what evidence is relevant and what other options exist. It does not establish that PRP is suitable for every form of thinning.

Ask how the clinician distinguishes a realistic goal from an expected outcome. The discussion should identify what improvement would mean in your case, what uncertainty remains and how a lack of benefit would be assessed. A treatment name alone cannot provide those answers or predict your response.

Understand the decision before a course

Clarify whether the first appointment is an assessment or a procedure, and who will perform the evaluation. Ask whether another medical assessment is needed before proceeding. You should understand the proposed approach before deciding on a course rather than using a preset session count as a substitute for diagnosis.

If treatment is considered, discuss its process, risks, follow-up and alternatives with the clinician. This article does not select a medication, recommend stopping an existing treatment or give a schedule. Its purpose is to help you enter a PRP hair consultation with a defined question and realistic expectations about the assessment.
