Secret DUO: Two Technologies, Two Different Conversations

Secret DUO contains two technologies: RF microneedling and a 1540 nm erbium-glass fractional nonablative laser. Knowing which component is proposed is essential to understanding the appointment, its purpose and the questions to ask before consenting.

What to know

  • Secret DUO combines RF microneedling and a 1540 nm nonablative laser.
  • Confirm which component is proposed.
  • Discuss meaningful risks alongside expected benefits.

Cutera Secret DUO

Secret DUO combines RF microneedling and a 1540 nm erbium-glass fractional nonablative laser in one platform. The two handpieces are distinct, and your provider explains which component is being considered.

Secret DUO does not use a CO₂ laser. Device information does not establish personal suitability or a treatment plan.

Two components with different delivery methods

Cutera identifies separate laser and RF microneedling handpieces on Secret DUO. Its laser uses light energy; RF microneedling delivers radiofrequency energy through needles. A shared console does not make those methods interchangeable or mean that both will be used during every appointment.

The manufacturer describes the laser for soft-tissue coagulation and resurfacing, and RF microneedling for electrocoagulation and hemostasis. These are device descriptions and intended-use statements. They are not a promise that every cosmetic concern will improve or that a combined treatment is appropriate for every person.

Clarify what nonablative means here

The 1540 nm component is a nonablative fractional laser. Secret DUO does not use a CO2 laser. When comparing treatment information, check the actual device and wavelength instead of treating every resurfacing image or recovery story as an example of the same procedure.

Ask whether the proposal uses the laser, RF microneedling or a combination, and why each component has been selected. Your provider should also explain what outcome is being evaluated. Texture, visible lines and a broader request for rejuvenation may require different discussions rather than one undifferentiated promise.

Include safety in the comparison

The FDA has reported serious complications with certain uses of RF microneedling, including burns, scarring, fat loss and nerve damage. That communication concerns the modality; it should not be presented as proof that a particular device has been recalled. It does make training, technique and informed discussion important.

Ask about the treating professional's experience with the selected component and how complications are assessed. Manufacturer footage showing the laser handpiece is not an RF needling demonstration. Bring the exact proposal to the consultation so that the device name, method, benefits, limitations and written care plan all refer to the same treatment.
