What Tox Treatment Is
Tox treatment, also called wrinkle relaxer or neuromodulator treatment, is an aesthetic injectable that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles to soften the expression lines created by repeated movement. At Chicago Medspa, tox treatment is performed by a licensed medical Nurse Practitioner under physician supervision in a clinical environment in the Chicago Loop.
The active ingredient is a purified neuromodulator that interrupts the nerve signal to a targeted muscle for a defined period of time. When injected at precise points along the forehead, between the brows (glabella), or around the eyes (crow's feet), the muscle's pull on the overlying skin softens — and the dynamic line that forms when you frown, raise your brows, or squint becomes less pronounced. For a longer look at how different neuromodulator approaches compare in a Chicago context, see our journal piece on wrinkle relaxer options in Chicago.
Tox treatment addresses dynamic lines — the lines that appear with movement. Static lines (etched in even when your face is at rest) and lost facial volume are better addressed with other treatments such as filler. Tox and filler are often complementary rather than interchangeable, and a thoughtful plan accounts for both, as discussed in our facial harmony guide.

Who Tox Treatment Is For
Tox treatment is suitable for most healthy adults seeking to soften dynamic expression lines while maintaining natural facial movement. Treatment goals generally fall into two categories:
- Corrective: clients in their late 30s, 40s, and beyond looking to soften visible lines that have developed over years of expression
- Preventive: clients in their late 20s and 30s using lower, conservative dosing to keep dynamic movement from etching lines into the skin over time
The most commonly treated areas are the forehead lines, the glabella ("11s" between the brows), and crow's feet around the eyes. Other areas — bunny lines, chin dimpling, downturned mouth corners — may also be addressed depending on assessment. The right approach depends on your facial anatomy, the strength and pattern of your muscle movement, and your aesthetic goals. For more on building a long-term plan, our piece on when to start anti-aging treatments covers timing considerations.
Tox treatment is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for clients with certain neuromuscular conditions, active skin infections at the injection site, or known sensitivity to the medication. Your provider will review your full medical history during the consultation and confirm whether tox is the right fit.
— The Visit —
What to Expect at Your Tox Treatment Appointment
A tox treatment appointment at Chicago Medspa typically runs 30–45 minutes, including consultation, mapping, treatment, and aftercare review. The actual injection portion is brief — usually under 10 minutes.
When you arrive at our Chicago Loop location at 30 N Michigan Ave, you'll be welcomed into a private treatment room. Your Nurse Practitioner reviews your aesthetic goals, examines your facial movement at rest and in expression, and discusses areas being treated. This assessment is the most important part of the visit — the muscle-by-muscle plan determines how natural the result will look.
The skin is cleansed and the injection points are mapped. Treatment uses a fine needle to deliver small doses at the planned points. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch — brief and well tolerated. Ice or topical numbing can be used for clients who prefer additional comfort.
After the injections, your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions and answer any questions about what to expect over the coming weeks. There is no required downtime — most clients return to work or other activities immediately.
— Results —
Results, Recovery, and Aftercare
Onset (3–7 days): Initial softening typically begins to appear within 3–7 days as the neuromodulator gradually takes effect. The change is subtle at first and builds steadily.
Peak (about 2 weeks): Full results are typically visible around the two-week mark. This is also when a complimentary refinement check, if needed, is most accurately assessed.
Duration (3–4 months typically): Results commonly last 3–4 months for most clients. Duration varies based on metabolism, muscle strength, treatment area, and individual factors. Maintenance appointments are usually scheduled before results fully wear off to keep movement consistent.
Immediate post-treatment do's and don'ts:
- Stay upright for 4 hours after treatment — avoid lying flat or face-down
- Avoid vigorous exercise, saunas, and hot yoga for 24 hours
- Avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated areas for 24 hours
- Tiny pinpoint redness or a small bump at injection sites can occur and typically resolves within an hour or two
- Mild bruising is uncommon but possible — arnica gel can help if it does appear
You'll be asked to follow up at the two-week mark if any refinement is needed. Annual care plans help most clients keep results consistent year-round.
— Why Chicago Medspa —
Why Choose Chicago Medspa for Tox Treatment
The technical product is only one variable in the result — placement, dosing, and aesthetic judgment determine whether the outcome looks refined and natural or overdone. At Chicago Medspa, tox treatment is performed by a licensed medical Nurse Practitioner under physician supervision. Every plan is individualized: your provider assesses your specific muscle pattern, builds a treatment map for your face rather than a generic template, and dosing is calibrated to preserve expression. The goal is always softer, never frozen. Many clients pair tox treatment with regular medical facials as part of an integrated long-term plan that supports skin health alongside expression-line treatment.
Chicago Medspa uses a flat-rate pricing model for tox treatment — no per-unit pricing, no surprises at checkout. Pricing for treatment areas is reviewed openly during your consultation so you know exactly what's planned before any product is drawn up.
