Chest & Neck Redness Treatment in Chicago
Intense pulsed light (IPL) to soften the sun-related redness and mottling that develop on the chest and neck, performed under physician supervision in the Chicago Loop.
Performed by licensed medical providers under physician supervision
— Overview —
What It Is
Years of sun exposure can leave the chest and neck with a mix of redness, brown mottling, and uneven tone, sometimes called poikiloderma. The delicate skin of the décolletage responds well to a gentle, non-invasive approach. IPL treatment uses intense pulsed light to target both the redness and the pigment, helping restore a more even tone over a series of sessions. A consultation confirms whether IPL is right for your skin.
— The Experience —
How It Works
- The Treatment. A handpiece delivers gentle pulses of light absorbed by redness and pigment in the skin.
- Session Length. A session typically takes about 20 to 45 minutes, with minimal downtime.
- Comfort. Most people describe a brief warm snapping sensation during treatment.
- Your Plan. Treatment is usually done as a series of sessions spaced a few weeks apart; your provider will outline a plan at your consultation.
— The Area —
Why the Décolletage Is Booked as Its Own Area
In our booking menu the neck and chest is its own record, separate from the face, because it behaves differently under treatment. The skin below the jawline is thinner than facial skin, it has seen decades of the same sun through open collars and summer necklines, and the pattern it develops, redness threaded with brown mottling, involves both vessels and pigment at once. IPL suits it because the light addresses both targets in the same pass.
The area also takes longer than a facial session: active treatment across the neck and chest runs about 30 to 40 minutes, which is why this appointment is booked at about an hour including preparation. It is treated as its own plan rather than an add-on to a facial IPL visit, though the two are often run in the same course; the IPL photofacial page lists every area we treat.
— Candidacy —
Candidacy Is a Safety Parameter Here
IPL works on the contrast between its targets and the surrounding skin, so who can be treated is a safety decision rather than a preference. Fair-to-medium skin tones are the well-suited range: Fitzpatrick types one through three are ideal, type four is treated cautiously with adjusted settings, and types five and six are generally not treated with IPL, because the risk is burns and pigment change rather than a weak result.
Treatment is also not performed over a tan or after recent sun exposure, during pregnancy, over an active infection or open skin, or where there is skin cancer or a history of it in the area. Melasma is a specific exclusion because IPL can worsen it. Photosensitising medications matter, our clinic guidance retains a waiting period after isotretinoin, and all of it is reviewed at the complimentary consultation before anything is booked.
— Before and After —
Preparing, and the Two Weeks That Follow
Preparation is mostly about sun: at least four weeks without deliberate sun exposure or tanning on the chest and neck, no self-tanner, and no tan on the day of treatment. Because this area is harder to keep covered than the face, winter courses are simply easier to schedule than summer ones, and your provider will say so plainly if the timing works against you.
Afterwards, brown mottling commonly darkens first and then flakes away over one to two weeks, while redness responds more gradually across the series. Reported adverse events include transient redness, temporary darkening of pigment, and, less commonly, blistering or burns, which are more frequent on tanned or darker skin. That risk profile is why this treatment is performed by licensed medical providers under physician supervision, and why daily sun protection afterwards is treated as part of the treatment rather than advice.
— The Series —
The Series, the Price, and Related Treatments
Most plans run three to five sessions spaced three to four weeks apart, with periodic maintenance afterwards. A single neck and chest session is listed in our booking at $265, and a three-session series is listed as IPL Neck and Chest 3 Sessions at $715. Real-world outcome data supports finishing what you start: keeping regular intervals and completing the planned number of sessions were each independently associated with better results.
Related concerns have their own pages. Redness on the face itself is covered under rosacea and facial redness, and brown spots without redness under sun spot treatment. A discrete visible vessel, on the face or the legs, is a different treatment entirely: laser vein treatment targets individual vessels rather than diffuse tone. Your provider will say which combination fits at consultation.

Who It's For
Adults with sun-related redness, brown mottling, or uneven tone on the chest and neck who want a non-invasive option. The décolletage is delicate skin; IPL is well suited to fair-to-medium skin tones, and a consultation confirms whether it is appropriate for you.
— Aftercare & Results —
What to Expect After
You can usually return to normal activities right away. Brown spots may darken and flake over a week or two, and brief redness or warmth settles within hours. Because this area is sun-exposed, daily sun protection is essential to protect and prolong your results.
