Chemical Peels: Light, Medium, and Deep Explained

The depth of the peel decides almost everything that follows. A clinical guide to what each category actually does.

    The Three Depth Categories

A chemical peel uses an acid solution to trigger controlled exfoliation by disrupting the bonds between skin cells. The variable that defines almost everything else about the treatment — what it can address, how long the recovery is, what the result will look like — is depth.

Three depth categories are clinically recognized. Light peels work at the level of the stratum corneum and the upper epidermis. Medium peels reach through the full epidermis and into the upper papillary dermis. Deep peels penetrate to the mid-reticular dermis. Each category has a distinct clinical profile.

Light Peels: What They Do and Don't Do

Light peels are the most common category and the most often used in maintenance protocols. They produce surface brightening, mild improvement in tone and clarity, and a refreshed appearance that lasts several weeks. Recovery is typically a few days of mild flaking, often barely visible to others.

What light peels do not do is address concerns that live below the upper epidermis. Deeper pigmentation, established fine lines, and meaningful textural change are outside their reach. Marketing that suggests otherwise generally overstates what the depth allows. They are best understood as a maintenance treatment, scheduled in series of four to six over a few months for cumulative effect.

    Medium Peels: The Correction Workhorse

Medium-depth peels are where most meaningful correction happens. They reach into the upper dermis, address pigmentation, fine lines, accumulated sun damage, and post-inflammatory marks more substantively, and produce visible tonal and textural improvement that holds for months.

The trade-off is recovery. Most clients experience five to seven days of visible peeling, with skin that clearly looks treated for the first three to four. Strict sun avoidance is required for several weeks afterward. Medium peels are generally scheduled into the lower-sun months in Chicago and timed so the recovery window does not collide with travel or events.

    Deep Peels: When They're Indicated

Deep peels reach into the mid-dermis and produce the most substantial change of any peel category — often comparable to certain laser resurfacing outcomes. They are clinically indicated for specific concerns: deeper photodamage, established lines, and in some cases textural change that has not responded adequately to medium-depth treatment.

Deep peels also carry the most significant recovery, the longest sun-restriction window, and the narrowest candidacy criteria. They are not a routine treatment, and the decision to perform one is made cautiously, with full clinical context and a clear plan for the recovery period.

Choosing Depth With Your Clinical Team

Depth selection is a clinical decision rather than a client preference. Choosing too deep produces unnecessary recovery and risk for what could have been addressed less aggressively. Choosing too light produces results that do not meet the goal. The right depth is the one that matches the concern, the skin type, and the realistic recovery window.

A clinical assessment with our medical team in the Chicago Loop establishes that match. The assessment also covers timing — most peels are scheduled into the lower-sun months, around travel, and in coordination with the rest of the skin plan. Common Questions

How do I know which depth of peel is right for me?

Through a clinical assessment. The right depth depends on the concern being addressed, your skin type and history, and the recovery window your calendar can accommodate. Our medical team selects depth based on what will produce the cleanest match between goal and risk.

How long is the recovery from each type of peel?

Light peels typically involve a few days of mild, often subtle flaking. Medium peels generally involve five to seven days of visible peeling and require strict sun avoidance for several weeks. Deep peels involve the most significant recovery and the longest sun-restriction window — and are indicated only in specific cases.

Can I get a chemical peel in summer?

Light peels can be scheduled year-round with disciplined sun protection. Medium and deep peels are generally scheduled into the lower-sun months in Chicago — typically late fall through early spring — to support clean recovery and reduce the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.

How many peels do I need to see results?

Light peels are typically delivered as a series of four to six over a few months. A single medium peel produces visible change; a series of two to three over several months delivers more substantive correction. Deep peels are usually a single treatment, with maintenance treatments at lighter depths afterward.

Do I need a consultation before a chemical peel?

Yes. Candidacy depends on skin type, history of pigmentation, current condition, and the realistic recovery window. Our medical team in the Chicago Loop completes a clinical assessment before any peel and selects the appropriate depth based on the full picture.
